Erasmus Initiative

From October 2011 - February 2012 second-level students will have an opportunity to get a first-hand account of the experience of studying and living in another European country, from a former Erasmus student.

Erasmus is an EU programme that allows students at third-level to choose to spend time studying or on work placement in another EU country.

Sharing the Erasmus Experienceis a pilot project is organised by the Higher Education Authority (the National Agency for Erasmus), in conjunction with the Department of Education & Skills and the Association of Teacher/Education Centres in Ireland (ATECI) which will enable teachers to arrange a visit by a former Erasmus student to speak to their class.

	How to arrange a visit:

From 1 October 2011 to 29 February 2012, schools can contact their Education Centre for contact details of voluntary speakers in their area.

The school can then arrange a mutually convenient time and date with the speaker.

As with other outside visits, the visit by an Erasmus speaker should be organised in line with the school’s child protection policy and should support the work of the curriculum. It is a matter for each school authority to decide on the suitability of any proposed visitors and to determine the suitability of the support materials and resources to be used. It may be advisable for you to verify the content of the presentation with the speaker before delivery to your pupils. At no time should the Erasmus speaker be left alone with the student group. Speakers should not give personal contact information to students.

For more information on Erasmus see: www.eurireland.ie.

What is an 'app'?

App is short for Application. Application in this case refers to a software application — in other words, a software program.

Our GDI app can be used on your iPhone or any smartphone with internet capability. It is the ideal way of keeping up-to-date when you are on the move or don't have access to a computer.

The app pulls our news feed onto your mobile device, and also links with our Twitter feed. We also have podcasts from the "Klaras Kiste" project, courtesy of German.ie and Scoilnet. Other podcasts come from the German radio station NRJ/Energy. We have chosen their "Band Lessons", which are short biographies of the latest music stars.

We hope to further develop the app and would welcome any suggestions from members.
